Dr. Schmitt is Chairman of the Board of Governors of the American Institute of Physics. He is also Chairman of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents, a Fellow of the New York Academy of Science and a member of its Presidents Council.

He is past president and former member of the Board of Directors of the Industrial Research Institute. He is a past member and vice chairman of the board of the New York State Science and Technology Foundation.
